History
In June 1937, Cheticamp Co-op received its first truckload of merchandise
and opened its doors for business. Forming a consumer cooperative was
new and there were plenty of sceptical people, which explains why this
momentous occasion did not come without struggles and determination.
Although it opened its doors with 48 members, it was still struggling
to find its place and true purpose in the community. This however did
not deter the 13 founding members who were determined to see success
for this consumer cooperative. In 1941, sales had reached $46,000; by
1976, they had reached $1,343,000.
Over a period of time, the cooperative has made a series of store expansions that are truly remarkable. It now boasts close to $12 million in sales, over 2,300 member-owners, and over 40 employees. It provides a comprehensive array of products and services in its 37,000 sq.ft. facility, including an impressive building supplies area. It also owns a well-established funeral home service.
The Cheticamp Co-op counts as one of its most noteworthy accomplishments, Co-op Atlantic's Performance Award. This award recognizes the exceptionally high retail performance standards of a select number of cooperatives within Co-op Atlantic's system and Cheticamp Co-op is one of the few cooperatives to receive this recognition for more than 25 consecutive years.
